DapperQ R/Evolution: NYFW 2017

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to shoot backstage for DapperQ's R/Evolution NYFW 2017 runway show. This is the fourth year DapperQ has put on a runway show for New York Fashion Week, and the show is NYFW's largest LGBTQ runway show, which is amazing. I, on the other hand, have never attended any NYFW related events. I've never been to a runway show, nevermind photograph for one. I wouldn't even consider myself particularly fashionable, to be honest (I faked being stylish for the show).

I was specifically asked to shoot backstage photos, and I figured that since I've done event photos in the past, things would be fairly simple. WRONG. Fashion photography is a whole different beast. Because we were shooting at a museum, a lot of the models were getting hair and make up done in children's art studios. Set ups were cramped. Lighting wasn't particularly great or consistent across rooms and spaces. Honestly, I was a little overwhelmed. I had no idea what I was doing. Luckily, everyone there was really kind and helpful, so I was able to relax a little, which I think really shows in my photos. I feel like they got better as the day progressed (for the most part). I'm pretty damn proud of some of my runway photos.

What I love so much about this show is that everyone there is a volunteer--from the photographers to the hair and makeup artists and even to the models themselves. Some of the models have walked many runways, while others were walking for the first time. It was so much fun to see what each person brought to the runway during the run through as well as the final show. The models were all SO gorgeous. The other backstage/bts photographers with me during the run through and I were just dying seeing all these beautiful people walk. It amazes me when people seem to think beauty is limited to tall and fair-skinned people when beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Anyone who wants to disagree with me just has to look at the people who modeled for DapperQ this past week.

Anyways, enough about me. Over the course of the next couple of weeks/days (depending on when I have time to update), I will be uploading photos in posts separated by designer, so be on the look out for those!!(:
